Rapid LatinoAmerica’s Operation “Cold Spell Emergency 2007” |
As a result of the cold spell that is affecting Peru for the last few months, with temperatures of -10 to -20 Celsius degrees, the Peruvian Government declared the state of emergency some departments such as Cuzco, Puno, Ayacucho, Tacna, Arequipa, Moquegua, Junin, Cerro de Pasco and Huancavelica.
Low temperatures are affecting zones over 3500 meters above sea level. Recent information indicate that more than 50 children of less than 5 years old have died due to pneumonia, and even more children have been affected by respiratory infections. This weather is also producing death on livestock that affect, in a significant percentage, the economy of the area in very poor communities.
